The Asia Foundation Signs MOU with the Korea Development Institute
Seoul, December 2, 2010 — At a ceremony held today in Seoul, The Asia Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korea Development Institute (KDI) for a collaborative project titled “South-South Development Cooperation Dialogue: Lessons for Development Effectiveness.” The program focuses on increasing dialogue on development cooperation strategies and aid effectiveness of emerging Asian donor countries. At the kick-off and planning meeting held December 2-3 in Seoul, approximately 25 experts from six countries (Korea, China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand) shared insights on the current donor landscape, Asian development partnerships, and the global aid architecture.
The MOU was signed between The Asia Foundation’s Vice President Gordon Hein and the Korea Development Institute’s President Oh-Seok Hyun and provides for a KDI grant of US$249,000 to the Foundation for implementation of the program through the end of 2011. In a separate program that began in 2008, the Foundation and KDI have partnered to promote further development assistance to Asian countries. Under this program, KDI along with its graduate institute (the KDI School of Public Policy and Management), have provided a total of US$600,000 over the past three years to the Foundation for regional exchanges, research, and conferences and is also slated to continue in 2011.
“Korea has emerged as an important global player in development cooperation and will host the High Level Forum on aid in November 2011. The Asia Foundation is excited to expand our cooperation with KDI to facilitate dialogue among emerging Asian donors,” said Edward Reed, Korea Country Representative for The Asia Foundation. “We look forward to engaging with experts from around the region to identify best development practices through workshops, dialogues, and conferences in 2011.”
For 56 years, The Asia Foundation has had a continuous program in the Republic of Korea. Today, the Foundation seeks to partner with Korean organizations in meeting the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities arising from Korea’s emergence as an important economic and diplomatic actor in the Asia-Pacific region.
