Asia Foundation Hosts Six Days in Afghanistan Event with Philanthropist Janet Ketcham
San Francisco, June 17, 2011 — On June 16, The Asia Foundation hosted Janet Ketcham at the Six Days in Afghanistan event. Ms. Ketcham, founder of the Janet W. Ketcham Foundation, supporter of the Foundation’s work in Afghanistan, and Lotus Circle member, shared her personal experience and photographs from her trip to Afghanistan last fall. Asia Foundation President David D. Arnold moderated the event, along with Asia Foundation Trustee, the former Ambassador to Afghanistan Theodore Eliot, Jr (pictured below).
Ms. Ketcham’s breathtaking photos from her recent trip show the Lama-e-Shaheed Girls’ School in Kabul, the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University, and other historical, cultural spots she visited as part of an Asia Foundation delegation. Ms. Ketcham had not visited Afghanistan since she and her late husband traveled there in early 1970s. At the event, she spoke and answered questions about the dramatic changes she observed in Afghanistan over the past 40 years.
With funding from the Janet W. Ketcham Foundation, The Asia Foundation has provided guidance and help to the Lama-e-Shaheed Girls’ School in Kabul, which enrolls over 4,500 girls from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Foundation has made critical improvements to the conflict-damaged school, repairing the structural integrity of the building and upgrading the school’s plumbing system. The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program donated brand new, English-language textbooks–ranging from computer science and math to communications and political science.
Formed in 2008, the Janet W. Ketcham Foundation supports initiatives in education, arts, the environment, and more. Ms. Ketcham’s passion for Afghanistan and desire to promote education for girls stems from her first visit in 1971. The Ketcham Foundation has built four schools in Afghanistan to date.
