Books for Asia and Green Apple Books Launch “Choose Books, Change Lives” Book Drive
San Francisco, June 24, 2011 — The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program has partnered with San Francisco bookstore Green Apple Books to launch “Choose Books, Change Lives,” an online book drive benefiting schools in 18 developing countries in Asia.
The online book drive is designed to bridge the gap between modern-day book lovers and children in poor communities throughout Asia who would not otherwise have access to beautifully illustrated books that encourage them to read. With a few clicks of the mouse, individuals or service groups who would like to share their love of books with less fortunate students can purchase one of four “book baskets” through the Green Apple Books website. They include classics such as Are You My Mother?, Biscuit Goes to School, DK Children’s Illustrated Dictionary, The Story About Ping, and the I Spy series. The purchased books will be delivered directly to Books for Asia’s warehouse located near the Port of Oakland from where they are shipped overseas for distribution to schools and libraries in Asia.
“People approach us frequently and ask us how they can help. The first thought most people have is a book drive though they don’t necessarily have the time to mobilize one and used books are less effective tools for inspiring a love of reading than brand-new books. So we’ve decided to modernize the old fashioned book drive with carefully selected books we know will make an impact,” explained Melody Zavala, director of Books for Asia.
“Green Apple Books is thrilled to be working with Books for Asia and its online book drive. We see in the store everyday how happy books make people, and we’re excited to give our customers the opportunity to enrich the lives of others through this project,” says Kevin Husanger, co-owner of the bookstore.
“Choose Books, Change Lives” is available year-round at www.booksforasia.org/greenapple. Each book in the four book basket collections were carefully selected based on feedback from more than 3,500 schools served by Books for Asia each year.
