The Asia Foundation to Host “National Workshop on Labor Migration and Trafficking” in Cambodia
Phnom Penh, August 12, 2011 — On Monday, The Asia Foundation will host the “National Workshop on Labor Migration and Trafficking” with partner, the National Committee to Lead the Suppression of Human Trafficking, Smuggling and Labor Exploitation of Women and Children, and with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). At the one and a half-day workshop, more than 100 Cambodian government officials, private industry leaders, including the Association of Cambodian Recruitment Agencies (ACRA), non-government organizations, and international agencies will discuss labor exploitation and trafficking.
Inaugural speeches will be provided by H.E. Chou Bun Eng, Chair of the Secretariat to the National Committee, on behalf of the National Committee and representatives of other relevant government stakeholders, USAID, and The Asia Foundation. Presentations by An Bunhak on behalf of ACRA will provide an overview of the challenges recruitment agencies face, while complementary presentations from international organizations such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the International Labor Organization (ILO), as well as NGOs, will share up-to-date information on the legal and policy framework and recent cases of labor exploitation and trafficking. Moderated question and answer sessions will encourage dialogue on how to tackle exploitative practices and trafficking in modern labor migration.
The Asia Foundation has been hosting the Forum to Address Exploitative Labor Recruitment and Trafficking with NGOs and international development partners since November 2010. At the Forum, stakeholders can share information, engage in dialogue on current issues, and provide complementary assistance to each other’s programs. This workshop provides an opportunity to expand the dialogue and engage government and the private sector in framing the key challenges and working together to tackle them.
