The Asia Foundation Launches the Shirin Pandju Merali University Scholarship Program for Women in Vietnam
Hanoi, October 25, 2011 — 100 Women Scholars Receive Scholarships at Vietnamese Universities
Today, The Asia Foundation, with support from the Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation, launched a five-year project to enable 100 women to pursue undergraduate studies at three prestigious colleges and universities in Vietnam. The generous donation supports academically gifted female students who are unable to continue their education to university level due to financial constraints. This university scholarship program is also unique in supporting students majoring in the natural sciences and technical fields, where women are traditionally under-representated. The award ceremony for the scholarships was held today at Hanoi National University.
The Merali Scholarship program helps cover the cost of tuition, educational supplies, and books. Recipients include 40 Vietnamese women enrolled in four-year B.S. degree programs in the sciences at Hanoi National University; 40 women enrolled in five-year B.S. degree programs in information technology, biochemistry, and other engineering majors at the Hanoi University of Technology; and 20 women enrolled in five-year B.S. degrees in civil engineering at the National University of Civil Engineering in Hanoi. The Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) recognizes all three institutions for their academic excellence and highly regarded programs.
The Asia Foundation worked closely with its local partner, the Center for Education and Development (CED) to select the scholarship recipients. The Merali Scholars are all women from low-income households who have been admitted into one of the prestigious colleges or universities listed above and have demonstrated both academic achievement and a commitment to learning.
The Foundation runs an extensive scholarship program helping disadvantaged girls across Vietnam continue their education at both the secondary and university level. To learn more or to donate, please visit: http://www.asiafoundation.org/howyoucanhelp/vietnamfund.php
