Event: December 08, 2011, Ulaanbaatar
Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia and The Asia Foundation host forum on pressing issues in mining
Ulaanbaatar, December 8, 2011 — Today, the Social Responsibility in Mining Conference convened at the Corporate Hotel at Nukht, Ulaanbaatar. The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia and The Asia Foundation’s “Engaging Stakeholders in Environmental Conservation” (ESEC) program jointly organized the conference, which brought together a diverse range of stakeholders including local government officials and mining company representatives to share information and knowledge on the social and environmental responsibilities of mining companies.
During the daylong event, attendees discussed strategies to implement mining policy at the local level and to facilitate learning between local governments and mining companies. The participants jointly developed draft policy recommendations and presented them to the Ministry for consideration.
Representatives from more than 22 soums (counties) in 12 aimags (states) from across Mongolia participated in the conference. The Asia Foundation’s ESEC program is currently working with local civil society partners to establish and convene multi-stakeholder councils. These councils will help to build consensus on issues relevant to sustainable and responsible mining with the hopes of strengthening environmental stewardship and promoting responsible resource use at the local level.
The Asia Foundation’s ESEC program receives support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
