The Asia Foundation Donates 161 Books to Office of President of Timor-Leste

Dili, October 30, 2012 — The Asia Foundation, through its Books for Asia program, has continued its support of the Office of the President of Timor-Leste with a donation of 161 academic books. The books cover a diverse range of topics, including economics, political science and international relations, and were requested by Mr. Guteriano Neves, Research & Analysis Officer of the President’s Office, to provide assistance to the Center of Research, Analysis and Documentation.
The Asia Foundation’s Country Representative Silas Everett expressed his support for the initiative, stating: “The Asia Foundation is proud and honored to continue this partnership, as the Office of the President of Timor-Leste continues to takes steady strides towards better public policy to serve the country.”
According to Article 16 of Organic Law 04/2011, the Center of Research, Analysis and Documentation aims to collect, organize and catalogue relevant information to support the President’s initiatives. The Center has become operational since the swearing in of President Taur Matan Ruak and currently has two staff members. As the long-term goal of the Center is to provide critical information and deep analysis of public policy-related issues, books donated by The Asia Foundation represent a valuable resource for the Center’s staff.
On accepting the books from The Asia Foundation, Mr. Neves stated that the Center was exploring ways to further its cooperation with the Foundation and was eager to find opportunities for staff to access important online journals. Mr. Neves extended his appreciation on behalf of the Center of Research, Analysis and Documentation, and expressed hope and willingness for future cooperation with the Foundation.
The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program annually distributes about 15,000 brand-new books to all of Timor-Leste’s 13 districts. These books are donated by some of the world’s leading publishers, including McGraw-Hill, Wiley, Pearson, Lynne Rienner, W.W. Norton & Company, and Island Press.
