Current Developments in Nepal: The Asia Foundation Hosts Ambassador Peter W. Bodde, United States Ambassador to Nepal, in Washington, DC
Washington, DC, March 13, 2013 — On Wednesday, March 13, The Asia Foundation hosted Ambassador Peter W. Bodde, United States Ambassador to Nepal, in Washington, DC for a discussion on Nepal and its current developments. Asia Foundation president David D. Arnold attended the event.
In recent years, Nepal has made tremendous strides by ending its civil war and transitioning from a monarchy to a democracy. Yet, nearly five years after the founding of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, the country still remains without a constitution and the parliament has been dissolved for nearly a year. Recently, negotiations by the major political parties have made progress renewing hopes that elections may be scheduled sometime in 2013. In his discussion with The Asia Foundation, Ambassador Bodde provided an update on the country and its current developments.
Before coming to Nepal, Ambassador Bodde served as the Assistant Chief of Mission for Assistance Transition, U.S. Embassy Baghdad. He served as the United States Ambassador to Malawi from 2008 to 2010. Prior to that assignment, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad from 2006 to 2008. Ambassador Bodde joined the Foreign Service in 1981, and has served in Guyana, Nepal, Germany, Bulgaria, Denmark, and India. He has also served in various positions in the State Department in Washington, DC, most recently as the Director of the Office of Management Policy.
Through its resident office in Nepal, The Asia Foundation has worked with governmental and nongovernmental organizations to address a range of issues that are central to conflict transformation, peace building and long term political, economic and social development.
