The Asia Foundation and the Japan International Cooperation Agency Sign a Strategic Partnership in Asia
Tokyo, April 12, 2013 — The Asia Foundation and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have formed a strategic partnership to advance their shared development goals in Asia.
Today in Tokyo, Mr. David D. Arnold, President of The Asia Foundation, and Mr. Akihiko Tanaka, President of JICA, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the new partnership.
Through this new strategic partnership, The Asia Foundation and JICA will work together to promote inclusive and sustainable development, as well as regional stability and prosperity in Asia-Pacific region.
“This partnership provides an excellent framework to join and enhance our efforts to advance sustainable, locally-driven development in the region. I am confident that by forming this strategic partnership, the two institutions will contribute even more effectively to a peaceful, just, and thriving Asia,” said President Arnold.
“Thus far, The Asia Foundation and JICA have worked together mainly in Afghanistan. This MOU will strengthen our collaboration in other Asian countries facing security and governance challenges. I have high expectations that this partnership will broaden and deepen our engagement with a range of Asian development partners,” said President Tanaka.
The two institutions will explore opportunities for widening their areas of cooperation through, among others, the implementation of specific projects and programs namely in peace-building; governance and law; capacity-building; gender equality; environment and disaster management; economic development and regional economic cooperation; and South-South cooperation, including partnership with Asian donor institutions.
