Asia Foundation in the Philippines Hosts Conflict Mitigation Forum and Launches Expanded RIDO Book in Mindanao
Davao City, April 30, 2014 — The Asia Foundation today held a conflict mitigation forum and launch for new publication Rido: Clan Feuding and Conflict Management in Mindanao – Expanded Edition at the Ateneo de Davao University in Mindanao.
The multi-sector forum gathered peace stakeholders to discuss the complex phenomenon rido, or local clan conflict, still prevalent in many parts of Muslim Mindanao. Rido is a type of conflict characterized by sporadic outbursts of retaliatory violence between families and kinship groups as well as between communities. In light of challenges to the implementation of the Government of the Philippines – Moro Islamic Liberation Front (GPH-MILF) Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, the forum served as an opportunity to bring rido back into the realm of conversation relative to the peace building work in Mindanao and marked the launch of an expanded edition of the 2007 book Rido: Clan Feuding and Conflict Management in Mindanao.
The Foundation’s Country Representative, Steven Rood, Australian Embassy Counsellor Geoff King together with Bangsamoro Transition Commission Chairman Mohagher Iqbal, and Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Undersecretary Jose Lorena graced the event.
The Rido book’s Expanded Edition, edited by Wilfredo M. Torres III and published by the Foundation and the Ateneo de Manila University Press, serves as a comprehensive and informative resource on rido and features deeper analysis and new approaches to resolving local clan conflict. The book is available for order at the Ateneo University Press website.
