The Asia Foundation’s Dr. Steven Rood Receives Ateneo Peace Recognition Award
Zamboanga City, August 15, 2014 — Today, The Asia Foundation’s Country Representative for the Philippines and Pacific Island Nations Dr. Steven Rood was honored with The Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s Ateneo Peace Recognition Award. Dr. Rood is being recognized for his significant contribution as an influential public intellectual and a passionate peace activist, and for his scholarly works which bring to light socio-political issues that impact peace and development in Mindanao and the Philippines.
The Ateneo de Zamboanga University organizes the special recognition annually in its commitment to honor exemplary individuals with relevant contributions. Members of the university community nominate individuals to be awarded. This year’s recipients also include Rey Mudjahid Ponce “Kublai” Millan who will receive the Fr. Eduardo P. Hontiveros, SJ Recognition for Culture and Arts.
“I am extremely honored to receive this Ateneo Peace Recognition,” said Dr. Rood. “Through years of work, I have been fortunate to meet and work with numerous people devoted to genuine reconciliation in the southern Philippines. As we grow closer to the implementation of a new peace agreement with the MILF, I would like to recognize and accept this award on behalf of the many people striving for the betterment of all peoples in Mindanao.”
Dr. Rood also currently serves as a member of the Third Party Monitoring Team for the implementation of the peace agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
Founded in 1912, The Ateneo de Zamboanga University is a Jesuit and Catholic University in Western Mindanao. The University is one of 30 higher education institutions in the Philippines to be granted a fully autonomous status. The University currently operates two campuses, and has become a leader in the community by leadership with partnership.
The Asia Foundation’s programs in the Philippines promote better governance to support economic growth, strengthen the rule of law, and foster peace and development in Mindanao.
