Asia Foundation Participates in Northeast Asian Mayor’s Forum in Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar, August 15, 2016 — On August 3-5, The Asia Foundation supported the third annual Northeast Asian Mayor’s Forum held in Ulaanbaatar. This year’s forum, “Supporting Cities to Promote Green Energy,” featured more than 90 representatives from 20 cities of the Northeast Asia region, and over 20 international organizations. The forum was divided into five sessions, including one on “Green Energy Solution for Electricity, Gas, and Heating” moderated by The Asia Foundation’s Director of Environment Programs Kim J. DeRidder.

The 2016 Forum focused specifically on cities across Northeast Asia seeking to effectively use green technologies, environmentally sustainable methods in industry, transport, housing, food production, etc. in order to reduce emissions and pollution, foster energy efficiency and efficient use of resources to fight climate change and sustain livability of cities.

In his opening address, Governor of the Capital City and Mayor of Ulaanbaatar S. Batbold highlighted the forum’s significance in creating an international and regular platform for designating the solutions for issues in green development, to expand cooperation, and solidify general development trends.

Other sessions included: City Policy Alignment to Advance COP 21 & SDGs; Energy Efficiency: Ensuring Efficiency and Incentive Mechanisms for Cities; Renewable Clean Energy Technologies from the Region; and Eco Transportation and Mitigating Pollution: Cities Initiatives and Experiences.
