Southeast Asian Ambassadors – The Future of America’s Relationship with Southeast Asia

Event: Monday, May 22, 2017, San Francisco

5:30 – 8:00 PM
Bechtel Conference Center
500 Washington Street, San Francisco, CA 94131

Southeast Asia was key to former President Obama’s “rebalance” towards Asia, with countries in the region seen as vital partners on issues such as economic integration and trade, balancing an ascendant China, security in the South China Seas, and the nuclear stalemate on the Korean Peninsula. Since coming to office, President Donald Trump has made overtures to leaders in the region, such as the Philippines, Thailand, and Singapore, and has agreed to attend meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in the fall. But it remains to be seen what Trump administration’s grand strategy will be to preserve American engagement in the region.

Join Asia Society of Northern California and the US-ASEAN Business Council as they bring together three of America’s current ambassadors to Southeast Asia and other experts to examine what the future of the U.S. relationship with Southeast Asia will look like under President Trump in the coming years. Will the new managers in the Trump Administration, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, build on Obama’s “rebalance” towards Asia or will they reconfigure America’s political and economic strategy in the region? How will the U.S. engage with ASEAN and the various countries who make up this regional institution?
