Gita Sabharwal was previously the deputy country representative for Sri Lanka. Ms. Sabharwal joined The Asia Foundation in September, 2009 as deputy country representative in Sri Lanka. She was previously the social development adviser for DFID India and worked on a multi-disciplinary team focusing on developing and managing DFID partnerships with the World Bank, UNDP, UNICEF, and the ADB, and the states of West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. She first joined DFID in 2000 and has been involved with programs relating to social protection and poverty reduction, civil society strengthening, decentralization, gender, and public enterprise reform.
From 2004 to 2007 she was assigned to DFID's office in Vietnam where she served as poverty and policy adviser. As poverty adviser, she led and managed a multidisciplinary team to deliver a large country program. Her work involved leading and managing high level policy dialogue between the Government of Vietnam (GoV) and the donor community. Her work included the design, implementation and financial management of a Governance Trust Fund to promote accountability and tackle corruption.
From 1995 to 1999, she served as program officer with GTZ India and from 1991 to 1995 she served as program officer with Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan, an Indian NGO.
Education: Bachelors in Sociology and a Masters in Psychology, Delhi University; Masters in Development Management, University of Wales.
