The Asia Foundation is a non-profit international development organization committed to improving lives across a dynamic and developing Asia. Working through our offices in 18 countries and informed by deep local expertise and six decades of experience, we address the critical issues affecting Asia in the 21st century by: strengthening governance, expanding economic opportunity, increasing environmental resilience, empowering women, and promoting international cooperation.

Headquartered in San Francisco, The Asia Foundation works through a network of offices in 18 Asian countries and in Washington, DC. Working with public and private partners, the Foundation receives funding from a diverse group of bilateral and multilateral development agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals. In 2016, we provided $87.8 million in direct program support and distributed textbooks and other educational materials valued at $9.5 million.

The Foundation’s relationship with the private and corporate sector includes receiving private gifts and donations, managing grants for specific programs or projects, and implementing a few collaborative partnerships. The corporate partner is a passive donor in most cases. In a few cases, corporate partners play a more active role, in line with their business or product line.

Examples of collaborative or shared value partnerships

Bangladesh: The Foundation partnered with United Commercial Bank and Banglalink one of the largest, telecom operators in the country, to provide local women entrepreneurs access to e-commerce opportunities and mobile banking services.

Myanmar: The Foundation partnered with Google and members of the Myanmar diaspora community to help fast track the launch of a Myanmar language version of Google.com and adopt Myanmar 3 (MM3) as the default character set.

Vietnam: This partnership brings together The Asia Foundation, Vietnam Bank for Social Policies (VBSP) and MasterCard in the deployment of the first mobile banking platform for low income populations in Vietnam. The initiative will prepare VBSP to roll out full scale mobile banking for VBSP’s clientele nationwide.

Afghanistan: Working with Liwal, Ltd., the Foundation is developing a new mobile application to improve the reading skills of primary school children in Kabul. The new literacy app will encourage reading as a fun activity, and will enable 2,000 children in grades one to three to read books both in Pashto and Dari.

All the above partnerships are relatively new and do not represent a streamlined approach to private sector engagement across the Foundation. Some offices and programs have experimented with corporate partnerships. Others continue to rely on traditional donor funded projects. As the global social economy grows, and traditional ODA shrinks proportionately, more INGOS are developing shared value partnerships with the corporate sector, to increase their impact and their sustainability.

The Foundation has established an intra-organizational Emerging Issue Team (EIT) on Shared Value. The team is charged with examining Creating Shared Value (CSV) in detail, developing an understanding of the actors involved, exploring relevant partnerships and funding possibilities, and designing a distinctive Asia Foundation approach and plan for CSV.

The purpose of the assignment is to work with the Foundation’s EIT to develop a shared value approach for the organization.

Specific Objectives

  • To determine the Foundation’s niche in Creating Shared Value (e.g. Women’s Empowerment, Environment, Economic Opportunities, Worker Wellbeing, Financial Inclusion, and Urban Governance)
  • To assess how similar organizations are working on CSV and how their experience may be relevant for the Foundation
  • To identify partnership and funding opportunities through CSVTo define any institutional changes that may be required to support The Foundation’s continued engagement in CSV
  • To design a consultative process for Foundation-wide input at the beginning of the assignment, and again towards the end

Scope of Work

  • Meet/discuss with EIT team leaders to develop a workplan
  • Interview key personnel in offices and programs to determine where, why, and how CSV works and can work
  • Conduct a document review of The Foundation’s history with private sector partners
  • Map potential for shared value engagement across the 18 countries where the Foundation works and help identify a set of countries for pilot engagement.Map potential corporate partners in the region  both large Fortune 500 companies and regional Asian companies to identify a set of top prospects
  • Help to identify a set of potential Shared Value approaches for the Foundation in a defined set are areas  (Women’s Empowerment, Environment, Economic Opportunities, Worker Wellbeing, Financial Inclusion, and Urban Governance)

Competencies

  • Five to seven years of experience
  • Experience and expertise in developing CSV strategies for INGOs
  • Experience and understanding of Asia desirable
  • Ability to travel if necessary
  • Ability to communicate effectively and inclusively with diverse stakeholders, with different and possibly divergent perspectives, on CSVs value for The Asia Foundation
  • Clear, concise writing, and presentation skills

Time frame

30 days between May 30 and August 15, 2017.
