From China: Empowering Aspiring, Women Entrepreneurs
Each year, hundreds of thousands of unmarried Chinese women between the age of 18 and 25 leave their rural homes to travel for days to start a new life working in various industries in coastal China. Last week, three of these women were granted opportunities to become their own bosses.
On April 18, three migrant women workers received small loans to start an online clothing store, a computer accessories store, and a garment processing shop in Beijing. The loans are a result of Enhancing Economic and Social Opportunities for Migrant Women Workers in Beijing, a one-year pilot program launched by The Asia Foundation with the support of The Boeing Company and in partnership with Beijing Fuping Development Institute.
The program, which aims to create economic opportunities for migrant women workers, will continue to fund 10 to 15 applicants over the course of the program, in addition to providing business and legal training for the new entrepreneurs.
