June 13, 2012
Watch a brand new video, screened for the first time publicly on June 7 at The Asia Foundation’s Lotus Leadership Awards in New York. The film features world-renowned teacher, leader, and advocate Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, founder of the Afghan Institute of Learning, and recipient of the 2012 Lotus Leadership Award. In this video, she tells how she launched the first learning centers inside refugee camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan; risked her life to run illegal home schools for girls during the Taliban regime; pioneered student-centered learning and teacher training in Afghanistan; and created the very first specialized health clinics for women, enabling many women and their families to see a doctor for the first time ever.
