Watch a brand new video, screened for the first time publicly on June 7 at The Asia Foundation’s Lotus Leadership Awards in New York. The film features world-renowned teacher, leader, and advocate Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, founder of the Afghan Institute of Learning, and recipient of the 2012 Lotus Leadership Award. In this video, she tells how she launched the first learning centers inside refugee camps in Afghanistan and Pakistan; risked her life to run illegal home schools for girls during the Taliban regime; pioneered student-centered learning and teacher training in Afghanistan; and created the very first specialized health clinics for women, enabling many women and their families to see a doctor for the first time ever.

In Afghanistan, physicians at training hospitals across the country struggle to update their skills and provide adequate care to patients because of a lack of equipment, materials, and up-to-date medical texts and reference materials. In 2011, The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia provided over 4,000 medical texts to health care institutions in Afghanistan – including Kabul Medical University. This film explores the reference materials shortage facing many physicians at training hospitals in Kabul, Afghanistan.

In this new video, Nepal Country Representative George Varughese describes The Asia Foundation’s approach to community mediation in Nepal, and includes footage of mediators and disputants engaged in an actual mediation session. Nepal’s citizens face both a weak and inaccessible formal justice system and inadequate means of resolving local disputes. Mediation is able to fill this void in judicial assistance by providing immediate, affordable, and locally accessible dispute resolution services. Since 2001, The Asia Foundation has worked intensively to develop interest-based mediation and is currently a recognized leader in community mediation in Nepal. Mediation in Nepal offers a space to resolve interpersonal and collective disputes, which transforms adversarial tensions into relationships based on mutual respect.
