Part 1 of 4: The Legacy of Shirin and Pandju Merali
For nearly 60 years, The Asia Foundation has been committed to improving access to education for women and girls across Asia. Since 2010, we have partnered with the Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation to provide young women from low-income backgrounds with scholarships to pursue university degrees in the hard and social sciences and technology—fields where women are overwhelmingly underrepresented. Since the program began, it has grown to support 476 young women in five countries: Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The Asia Foundation is grateful to the Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation and its late founder, Mr. Pandju Merali, for providing women in Asia the chance to gain a higher education and reach their potential, opening up opportunties for them to improve thier lives and that of their families and communities.
