Thais Elect Yingluck Shinawatra

On July 3, 2011, Thais went to the polls in the first national election since violent protests left 91 dead in May last year. The election followed five years of political tension, a period that included a succession of disputed parliamentary elections, military intervention, blockades of airports and government buildings, and large-scale street demonstrations. In the end, voters picked Yingluck Shinawatra of the Pheu Thai Party over incumbent Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva of the Democrat Party. Yingluck is the younger sister of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, who was forced from office in 2006. The images in this slideshow capture campaign season fervor and election-day activities, taken by Asia Foundation photographers.
