George Varughese of The Asia Foundation discusses the complexities of life in Afghanistan. His commentary is punctuated by highlights from the Foundation's Survey of the Afghan People 2009, the fifth survey of the Afghan people conducted by The Asia Foundation. The survey was released in Kabul on October 27 and is a comprehensive assessment of national perceptions of security, economy, governance, democratic values, and women and society. The 2009 fieldwork was conducted during June 17-July 6, prior to the August 20 elections, and builds upon previous surveys conducted in 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008. George Varughese is an expert on Afghanistan, and was first assigned to the Foundation's Kabul office in 2005. His service there included two years as the Foundation's country representative in Afghanistan. In 2009, Mr. Varughese assumed the post of Country Representative, Nepal for The Asia Foundation. He now resides in Kathmandu.
