New Study Deems Cambodia eLearning Program a Success

Phnom Penh, April 1, 2007 — Since 2003, The Asia Foundation has supported rural Community Information Centers (CICs) to provide more access to information for people outside of Phnom Penh. Through the Foundation’s eLearning program, five Centers offered two semesters of online business courses in Khmer for the International Institute of Cambodia (IIC). These courses enabled 250 students to receive scholarships to study in their home towns rather than incurring the expense of moving to Phnom Penh.

A new study, conducted by the University of Tsukuba, Japan, examined The Asia Foundation’s eLearning program and found the now-completed program to be a success. According to the study, “Despite the disadvantages faced by these students, their performance and achievements were considered to be excellent. More than 75 percent of these students received passing grades which was similar to other Cambodian students at IIC enrolled in traditional classroom sessions. The course content was certainly appropriate given the needs of the country and the interests of the students in improving their career prospects.”
