Pen American Center Panel Discusses Human Rights and Religion

September 17, 2010 — A press release on the Pen American Center website discusses a recent panel held in conjunction with the Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva. This panel pooled together experts, who discussed the potential harm of imposing legal restrictions on expression considered defamatory to religions. One of the panelists, Budhy Rahman from The Asia Foundation in Indonesia, is quoted as saying, “The U.N. resolutions on defamation of religion are incompatible with the fundamental freedoms of individuals to peacefully express their thoughts, ideas and beliefs. Measures prohibiting the defamation of religion punish the peaceful criticism of ideas and disfavored political or religious beliefs. We need more concrete dialogue.” Read the full article:¬† “Writers Urge U.N. to Abandon Efforts to Prohibit Defamation of Religions.”
