Asia Foundation Praised for its Civil Society Work in Indonesia

February 4, 2011 — An op-ed in The Jakarta Post (Indonesia) examines U.S. foreign policy in the Arab world, particularly reactions to recent events in Egypt. The author, Endy Bayuni, recommends the 1998 U.S. policy course in Indonesia, before and after the Soeharto regime. Bayuni highlights how the U.S., through USAID, The Asia Foundation, Ford Foundation, and other organizations, had invested heavily in helping to build a strong and civil society, thus laying the groundwork for democracy.
