San Francisco, February 10, 2011 — Accomplished Champion of Asian Philanthropy to Lead Donor Services Group
Barnett F. Baron will be the new president & CEO of Give2Asia, the leading service provider for high-impact philanthropy to Asia. Mr. Baron is an innovator in the field of Asian philanthropy and one of Give2Asia’s principal architects.
Mr. Baron is currently executive vice president of The Asia Foundation, a U.S.-based public charity with nearly 60 years of experience supporting Asia’s development and the creation of public and private institutions in the region.
Mr. Baron begins his new role in April 2011, overseeing Give2Asia’s charitable funding in over 20 countries, as well as private donor engagements, which have resulted in US $150 million for projects that address issues such as health, education, social services, and disaster response. Since its founding in 2001 by The Asia Foundation, Give2Asia has assisted more than 8,500 donors and funded over 4,000 projects.
“Give2Asia’s significant growth during the past 10 years has been driven by excellent service to donors and successful efforts by the organization to expand the impact of private giving to Asia,” said Mr. Baron. “I share Give2Asia’s dedication to philanthropy and donor services, and deeply value its skillful support of leaders and emerging leaders carrying out charitable work in the region.”
“Barnett has been a trusted friend of Give2Asia for many years. He is an expert in Asia’s nonprofit sector, with excellent connections within the global philanthropic community,” said Ta-lin Hsu, Chairman of the Board of Give2Asia and Chairman and Founder of H&Q Asia-Pacific. “With Barnett’s strong credentials and experience as a visionary in the field of Asian philanthropy, Give2Asia is even better positioned to serve corporations, families and foundations that help communities in need.”
“This selection recognizes the deep engagement that Barnett has had with Give2Asia from its inception, dating back to the early conceptualization and design phase of the organization within The Asia Foundation,” said David Arnold, President of The Asia Foundation and a Trustee of Give2Asia. “Both The Asia Foundation and Give2Asia are leaders in their respective and complementary niches in Asian development, and I look forward to working with Barnett and our respective Boards to effectively leverage the impact of both organizations.”
Mr. Baron joined The Asia Foundation in 1993 and has served as Executive Vice President from 1994 to 2011. At the Foundation, he has played a critical role in strategic planning, as well as supervising the Foundation’s financial, administrative, human resources, and communications departments. He helped establish the Foundation’s offices in Vietnam and China, and has supervised or contributed to programs in China, Hong Kong, Japan, and both South and North Korea.
In 1999, Mr. Baron was the primary author of a concept to facilitate tax-privileged giving to qualified Asian grantees, utilizing The Asia Foundation’s network of country offices throughout Asia to identify potential grantees, conduct due diligence, manage grant funds, monitor grantee performance, and report to donors. This led to the creation of Give2Asia in 2001.
Mr. Baron earned a B.A. in government and history from New York University; and his M.A. in international relations and Ph.D. in political science from Yale University.
