Reuters’ TrustLaw Features Asia Foundation’s Judicial System Monitoring Program in Timor-Leste

June 28, 2011 — An article in Thomson Reuters’ TrustLaw features The Asia Foundation’s Judicial System Monitoring Program, which provides scholarships to legal aid lawyers in Timor-Leste to complete a two-year mandatory certification training program. The Asia Foundation’s Lilian Dang explains, “After 30 July 2012, you cannot practice law anymore if you have not completed the training and there are civil and criminal implications if you practice illegally.” According to the Foundation’s 2008 Law and Justice in Timor-Leste survey, Timor-Leste’s justice system is still emerging and few people are aware of or understand its workings.
