Reuters: Policy Pledges of Thailand’s Incoming Government

July 12, 2011 — An article in Reuters discusses Yingluck Shinawatra’s key campaign promises, ranging from wage increases to infrastructure projects. Yingluck also wants to turn Thailand’s three southernmost provinces into a special administrative zone with one elected governor under a plan to end a separatist insurgency that has killed at least 4,600 people since 2004. According to The Asia Foundation’s 2010 National Survey of the Thai Electorate: Exploring National Consensus and Color Polarization, 62 percent of those surveyed believe decentralizing power could help end the conflict, but 51 percent oppose folding the provinces into a single elected government.
