National Parliament of Timor-Leste Launches Two Year Project to Strengthen Information and Communications System

Dili, February 9, 2012 — Today, the National Parliament of Timor-Leste launched a groundbreaking initiative to strengthen the legislature’s Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) capabilities. With the support of House Democratic Partnership (HDP), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and The Asia Foundation, the National Parliament will boost its efficiency in carrying out its Constitutional duties through increased internet connectivity, efficiency and security of its internal networking, and improved skills in ICT management.

In February 2011, the President of National Parliament of Timor-Leste, Mr. Fernando La Sama de Araujo, and HDP’s Chairpersons, Rep. David Drier and Rep. David Price from the U.S. House of Representatives signed into effect a Memorandum of Understanding that restated HDP’s commitment to its partnership with the National Parliament, which paved the way for the current project.

The project was designed to achieve two objectives: 1) to strengthen the Information and Communication Technology planning and management capacity of Parliament, and 2) to establish a sustainable ICT infrastructure in the Parliament.
