San Francisco and Washington, D.C., February 22, 2013 — On February 22, USAID honored The Asia Foundation’s “Visualizing Afghanistan: A Survey of the Afghan People” initiative as a featured project at its Social Media Week 2013 event, “#Popcorn + International Development,” held at USAID Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Foundation’s video on the project—which showcases Asia Foundation filmmaker Jon Jamieson and highlights the Foundation’s digital work in Afghanistan–was selected by USAID and screened at the event as a top video from the international development community.
The Visualizing Afghanistan initiative is part of Afghanistan in 2012: A Survey of the Afghan People, the Foundation’s eighth survey in Afghanistan and the broadest public opinion poll in the country, including comprehensive interviews with 6,290 Afghan citizens across all 34 provinces. “Visualizing Afghanistan” demonstrates the intersection of social media and development by allowing users to interact with survey data digitally, exploring by region, year, or specific survey questions, and providing the opportunity to download summary data tables for a more complete picture. Survey data from 2006 to 2012 is available for review and download.
