Australia Continues Support for Community Development Activities

Makati City, Philippines, July 23, 2013 — The Australian Government has awarded financial grants to 21 Philippine civil society organizations (CSOs) amounting to nearly P30 million to help address the pressing needs of various communities around the country.

The grants aim to help the poor and vulnerable cope with disaster risks, increase livelihood opportunities for people with disabilities, support health services including feeding programs, enhance services to women and children, and improve access to water and sanitation.

This support is through the Philippines-Australia Community Assistance Program (PACAP), an Australian Government initiative which has provided direct assistance to Filipino communities for over 26 years. To date, PACAP has awarded more than 2,200 grants to 1,320 civil society organizations benefitting more than 1.4 million poor Filipinos. The program has been implemented in partnership with The Asia Foundation since 2011.

Mr. Geoff King, AusAID Counsellor in the Philippines, formally awarded the grants to the successful Luzon-based organization on July 23, 2013.

“PACAP remains the primary way for Australian aid to directly reach disadvantaged communities in the Philippines. By providing small grants to civil society organizations working on the ground, Australia helps build the capacity of communities to meet their needs,” Mr King said.

“The Australian Government believes that PACAP’s efforts for the last 26 years have contributed to more capable CSOs and more vibrant communities throughout the Philippines. The program demonstrates that Australia is making a difference in the lives of Filipinos.”

The awarding ceremony for Visayas and Mindanao-based grantees will be held in Cagayan de Oro in August.

Australia is a long-standing development partner of the Philippines and one of the country’s largest bilateral grant aid donors. In 2013-14, Australia will provide A$141 million (about P5.7 billion) in development assistance to the Philippines.
