Turner H. McBaine, founding secretary of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees (1954-1985), was a leading San Francisco corporate lawyer for nearly three decades and general counsel for Standard Oil of California, which later became Chevron. Serving in the U.S. Navy from 1941 until 1945, Mr. McBaine rose to the rank of lieutenant commander and was decorated with the Legion of Merit and the Order of the British Empire. In addition to his role as trustee founder of the Foundation, Mr. McBaine was trustee for the World Affairs Council of Northern California (1948 to 1954) and a member of the Pacific Union Club and the Burlingame Country Club. Mr. McBaine graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California at Berkeley and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in England.
