Environmental Leadership Programs
The Asia Foundation has sponsored the participation of young Asian environmental practitioners in the UC Beahrs Environmental Leadership Program. The three-week summer certificate course of the University of California, Berkeley brings together mid-career professionals with College of Natural Resources faculty, environmental policy practitioners, and fellow participants from around the world to consider the "complex social, economic and biophysical aspects of natural resource and environmental management."
Countries represented among the 22 emerging leaders who have attended UC Beahrs ELP under Foundation auspices include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan of the Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), whose participation in 2003 was funded in part by the Foundation, was a 2007 recipient of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize. In 2010, an additional grant from The Asia Foundation enabled Ms. Hasan to participate as a featured speaker in the UC Beahrs ELP 10th Anniversary Workshop. The Foundation also funded the participation of seven of its UC Beahrs ELP alumni in the anniversary program. This was followed by a Foundation-organized study tour on water resource management and related environmental policy issues in the Northwest.
