Combating Trafficking in Persons

Supporting local-level commitment and action coupled with national-level policy reform to combat internal, international, and cross-border trafficking in persons. Countering trafficking through a holistic approach addressing prevention, protection, and prosecution. Developing a position paper analyzing the current global and national legal and social framework defining anti-trafficking efforts and defining pragmatic strategies on a gap analysis. Conducting a study on the exploitation on trafficking of Nepalese girls and women for prostitution from a criminal business perspective. Participating in trafficking in person conclave to end human trafficking in the South Asia region held at Kolkata, India. Promoting a public private partnership program to ensure services to target beneficiaries who are primarily young people vulnerable to trafficking and or exploitative labor migration and survivors of trafficking. Conducting training for police officers in Banke District on how to use the computerized motoring system to track Trafficking in Person (TIP) cases and how to utilize information on the system to better develop and utilize data and trends regarding TIP in the resolution of cases.

Community Mediation at Village Development Committees (VDCs)

Expanding community mediation services to 24 new locations. Building capacity of the existing national and district level mediator networks and enabling the national level network to develop into an independent, functional, and professional entity.

Consortium for Elections and Political Process Strengthening

Strengthening the legislative capacity of the Constituent Assembly/Legislative Parliament.  Improving the parliament library and the media center and building capacity of the Parliament Secretariat staff. Promoting civic awareness and public engagement on legislative process through radio and print media. Building civil society organization’s capacity to provide monitoring on the legislative process through interest group audits of proposed legislation. Conducting youth and women-focused nation-wide town hall consultation on legislative agendas.

Cost of Economic Non-Cooperation to Consumers in South Asia (COENCOSA) Phases 1 & 2

Conducting a study to highlight the gains that would accrue to consumers of five South Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) from enhanced regional trade integration. Presenting major findings of the study at a regional meeting in Kathmandu in February 2012. Building upon the results of the research, deciding that next phase activities would be result- and action-oriented, focusing on procedural non-tariff barriers and on awareness raising, including media coverage, networking and advocacy within each of the five countries and across the concerned countries.

DFID Partnership Program Agreement: Conflict and Security Programs

Regional partnership with the Department for International Development, U.K. (DFID), including seven countries (Pakistan, Myanmar/Burma, Nepal, Timor-Leste, Thailand, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka), that is working to improve state-society relations in conflict-affected areas throughout the region. Helping to reduce mistrust and alienation between conflict-affected communities and state authorities. Strengthening and expanding locally driven efforts to improve governance and resolve disputes. Contributing to improved understanding of aid effectiveness in conflict-affected and fragile states.

Drafting of Community Mediation Bill

Participation in a study tour to Sri Lanka to learn about the implementation, regulation, and monitoring of Mediation Boards from Sri Lankan experience.
Providing support for the Ministry of Law and Justice in drafting and finalizing mediation regulation, code of conduct, mediation procedures, and basic training manual

Gender-based Violence in Nepal

Supporting the inaugural program of Cultural Campaign for the Guarantee of Rights and Dignity of Labor Free from Violence and exploitation for Women Working in the Entertainment Sector. Participation at the Second Himalayan Studies Conference at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo to present a paper on Development Alternative for Gender Equality and Social Justice, Macroeconomic Framework for Gender & Social Inclusion and Its Implications for Development Planning and Practice. Producing a Public Service Announcement (PSA) highlighting the achievements of the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (OPMCM) Gender Empowerment and Coordination unit (GECU) and activities of eleven ministries. Conducting research on the contribution made by GBV unit and other government agencies. Participation in a study visit to Islamabad to understand the Government of Pakistan’s experience in combating GBV. Supporting an interactive program on the role of media to combat gender based violence. Conducting an action research and documentation on Chhaupadi in mid-western and far-western development regions of Nepal.
