Maribel Buenaobra Examines the Gender gap in the Philippines

March 8, 2011 — An article in Sun Star Cebu (Philippines) highlights the Philippines being ranked best in Asia on gender equity, according to the 2010 World Economic Forum. However, women’s access to schools and jobs in rural communities can still be difficult. As of 2009, 56 percent of Filipinos 15 to 34 years old who worked abroad were women. The Asia Foundation’s Maribel Buenaobra comments, “Stronger families, spared the psychosocial problems resulting from single-headed households or absentee parents, is what the Philippines needs to truly close the gender gap.” Read the full article: “Editorial: Asia’s best, absent mothers.”
