Asia Foundation’s Give2Asia Mobilizes Critical Recovery Effort in Japan

March 16, 2011 — In response to the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan’s northeast coast, The Asia Foundation’s partner organization, Give2Asia, has launched the Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Fund to work with local partners in Japan to respond to recovery needs.

The March 11 disaster has left half a million homeless, millions without food and water, and a worsening situation with a ruptured nuclear power plant requiring thousands to evacuate.

“Our hearts go out to our friends and colleagues and their families across Japan. It is our aim to ably assist in the recovery process immediately,” said Barnett F. Baron, Executive Vice President of The Asia Foundation and incoming president and CEO of Give2Asia. “The economic challenges of recovery are going to be great, but the Foundation believes that by partnering with Japanese organizations that are responding to the disaster, we can also effectively contribute to the recovery of the local economy.”
