Al Jazeera: Wajahat Ali Discusses Pakistan’s Media Coverage of Blasphemy Laws

April 1, 2011 — A broadcast on Al Jazeera’s “Listening Post” discusses anti-blasphemy laws in Pakistan and how Pakistan’s media can not disclose the details of the alleged offences. Wajahat Ali, The Asia Foundation’s William P. Fuller Fellow, is one of the speakers during the Global Village Voices section. Ali says, “Pakistani media has slightly failed to educate the people about blasphemy laws. It also failed to raise some very important issues such as the nature and extent of religious verticalization in Pakistan and the overall direction of their country. Most media organizations have blamed the government for their dictator hurting security situation in Pakistan but they never tried to mold the public opinion against these militant [forces] themselves.” Watch the full broadcast: “What is all the buzz about Japan?”
