Al Jazeera English: Kim McQuay Discusses Violence in Thailand’s Deep South

May 13, 2011 — A TV broadcast on Al Jazeera English’s “NEWSHOUR” program features an interview with Kim McQuay on the recent escalation of violence in Thailand’s southern provinces. McQuay highlights findings in The Asia Foundation’s 2010 Democracy and Conflict in Southern Thailand: A Survey of the Thai Electorate in Yala, Narathiwas, and Pattani. “Some of the [survey] findings that emerged were quite striking. There’s no doubt that at the poles of the extremist movements there are very strong views. But amongst the population at large, the view that seemed to come across was characterizing the conflict…as one for recognition by the Thai state, recognizing the unique cultural circumstances of the Pattani Malay people…rather than the independence struggle as it’s portrayed in some quarters,” says McQuay. The segment aired on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 5:00 p.m. (Bangkok time).
