The Asia Foundation Announces Saima Anwer as Deputy Country Representative in Bangladesh

San Francisco and Dhaka, May 20, 2011 — The Asia Foundation announced the appointment Saima Anwer as Deputy Country Representative in Bangladesh. Ms. Anwer joined the Bangladesh office on May 15, 2011 and brings over 7 years of international development experience, including Bangladesh and Pakistan. She will work under the direction of Country Representative Hasan Mazumdar, who has led the Bangladesh office since December 2009. The Asia Foundation has been programming in Bangladesh since 1954 and has donated over 2 million books and journals to local organizations within the country.

Ms. Anwer began her development career in 2004 at the Foundation’s Pakistan office as Education Specialist for the Education Sector Reform Assistance Project. Most recently, Ms. Anwer worked as Deputy Country Director for the Bangladesh office of Save the Children U.K. (SCUK). With SCUK since 2008, she supervised and managed a $6 million program portfolio, covering areas such as education, livelihood and food security, social protection, and emergency response and risk reduction. Ms. Anwer also helped build the organization’s external profile and maintained relationships with relevant various professionals in local and national government, donors, as well as key international and UN organizations.

In 2008, Ms. Anwer worked with the Aga Khan Foundation as Program Advisor on Links to Learning: Education Support to Pakistan. She was responsible for providing technical leadership and organizing needs assessments at the federal and provincial levels. From 2004 to 2007, Ms. Anwer worked for SCUK in Pakistan as Technical Director where she oversaw a $5 million child labor education program.

Ms. Anwer received her Master’s in English Literature from University of the Punjab in Pakistan and also a Master’s in International and Transcultural Studies from Columbia University in New York.
