The Asia Foundation, Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation and Zorig Foundation Award Scholarships to Mongolian Women
Ulaanbaatar, September 29, 2011 — Second year that 60 new Scholars will Receive Four-Year Undergraduate Scholarships at Prestigious Mongolian Universities
Committed to improving access to education across Asia, The Asia Foundation, Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation, and Zorig Foundation awarded scholarships to 60 female students from the National University of Mongolia (NUM) and Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST). This year marks the second year of the scholarship program in Mongolia, bringing the total number of scholarship recipients to 120.
The Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation provides scholarships to female university students who are unable to continue their education due to financial constraints. The scholarships cover tuition fees, educational supplies, and books for four academic years.
Applicants to the Shirin Pandju Merali Scholarship Program undergo a competitive selection process. Of the 274 applicants, 161 students were interviewed by The Asia Foundation and Zorig Foundation. After careful selection, 48 women studying for their Bachelor of Science degree and 12 women studying for their Bachelor of Arts in Social Science degree were selected for the scholarships.
The Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation was established by Pandju Merali in honor of his late wife, Shirin Merali. The Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation is committed to educating girls in the sciences in developing countries. Together with the Asia Foundation, the Shirin Pandju Merali Foundation launched women’s scholarship programs in Malaysia, Mongolia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. Scholarship recipients have already enrolled at their universities for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Since 1954, The Asia Foundation has worked to improve access to and the quality of education across Asia—especially for girls. In 1993, the Foundation was the first international NGO to set up operations in Mongolia. Since then, the Foundation has played an instrumental role in developing and strengthening governance and civil society in Mongolia.
