Asia Foundation Trustee Karl Eikenberry and President David Arnold Discuss Afghanistan at Pacific Council on International Policy
San Francisco, January 25, 2013 — On January 24, Asia Foundation trustee and former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry joined Asia Foundation president David D. Arnold in conversation at the Pacific Council on International Policy in Los Angeles. Over 100 private sector executives, diplomats, and philanthropists attended the dinner program, “Visualizing Afghanistan: Peace and Security Beyond the Transition.”
Kicking off the evening’s program, Mr. Arnold spoke about The Asia Foundation’s work and long history in Afghanistan, including the Foundation’s annual public opinion poll, the Survey of the Afghan People. Ambassador Eikenberry, a retired U.S. Army Lt. General who held two command posts in Afghanistan and led President Obama’s civilian surge as U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan from May 2009 to June 2011, provided expert insight on the state of Afghanistan today and the 2014 transition. Following Ambassador Eikenberry’s address, the two held a lively discussion on the political, economic, and security challenges ahead as the country works toward long-standing goals of peace and stability, including the Presidential Elections in 2014 and Parliamentary Elections in 2015, and the role of the international community in Afghanistan after 2014.
The Asia Foundation is committed to improving lives, helping societies flourish, and addressing critical issues affecting Asia in the 21st century. The Foundation has a long history in Afghanistan, having maintained a country office from 1954 to 1979. Since 2002, the Foundation has worked on the ground – with local Afghan partners and facilitated by its Afghan staff and with government and civil society – to support Afghan efforts to rebuild the country through management and technical training. Programs focus on governance, law, education, and opportunities for women’s participation.
