Asia Foundation Economic Development Experts Véronique Salze-Lozac’h and Syed Al-Muti Present at 7th International Workshop on Public-Private Dialogue in Frankfurt
San Francisco, March 14, 2014 — On March 3-6, in Frankfurt, Germany, Asia Foundation Chief Economist and Director of Economic Development Véronique Salze-Lozac’h and Asia Foundation Associate Director of Economic Development Syed Al Muti presented at the 7th International Workshop on “Public-Private Dialogue for Sustainable Business.” The workshop, organized by the World Bank Institute and GIZ, in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation and the Global Partnership for Effective Development and Cooperation, gathered 145 participants from 33 Public-Private Dialogue (PPD) initiatives to discuss recent developments in PPD knowledge and tools and to explore how PPD is used to foster more inclusive development. Case study presentations and discussions provided participants the opportunity to learn from one another and discuss critical PPD related topics like effectiveness, sustainability, and impact.
Véronique Salze-Lozac’h participated in the “The How To’s of Monitoring & Evaluation in PPDs” session, presenting an online database aimed at facilitating the monitoring and evaluation of PPDs at the sub-national level. She explained: “The Online Issue Tracker is a tool that allows secretariat of Public-Private Dialogues to keep track of issues raised, document each issue, collecting information and data on actions taken and progress made. It can be adapted to PPDs at the local or national level and includes a section where indicators can be selected to measure the outcome and impact of the reform or progress achieved.”
The Foundation has years of experience using result-driven PPDs to push for policy reforms. These dialogues can be formal or informal, on-going, or ad hoc, and are always a way to propose a platform for the private and the public sectors to address selected issues constraining private sector development and to find practical solutions to achieve tangible results.
Syed Al-Muti presented in the “Political Economy Analysis Application on the field: The Development Entrepreneurship Approach” session based on the Foundation’s successful work in Bangladesh using political economy to policy reform approach. The Foundation has successfully implemented PPDs at the sub-national and national level in economic development programs in Asia and in collaboration with national and international development partners. The session focused on securing political wills for reforms and organizing a series of high-level engagement of country political leadership on key sectors where governance issues can impede growth, so as to identify challenges and foster political will. More information on the Foundation’s Development Entrepreneurship approach is available here and here.
The Foundation has a long history of supporting economic growth across Asia through both public and private channels. The Foundation’s approach is to empower local entrepreneurs with the tools, information, and resources they need to seize business opportunities and to work with government, local authorities, and civil society to improve business environments at the regional, national or local levels.
