San Francisco, July 24, 2014 — On the evening of July 23, The Asia Foundation President and World Affairs Council Trustee David D. Arnold moderated a thought-provoking discussion on the future of India after recent elections, “Modi’s India: Thinking About the Future” at the World Affairs Council in San Francisco.
Speakers included The Asia Foundation Vice Chair of the Board and Executive Committee Sunder Ramaswamy, Pradeep Chhibber, professor and Indo-American Community Chair in India Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and Thomas Blom Hansen, Reliance-Dhirubhai Ambani Professor of South Asian Studies and director of the Center for South Asia at Stanford University.
Mr. Arnold moderated an engaging discussion as the panelists answered questions from the audience on the future of India with newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the helm. The experts touched on a range of topics including the youth voter turnout, the economy, poverty, the environment and pollution, India and Pakistan relations, ethnic and religious tensions, and the projected domestic and international agenda.
This past election marked the highest voter turnout ever in India, including a large contingent of youth voters. Professor Chhibber noted that for the first time, “the grass-roots politician” is coming to power. Mr. Ramaswamy touched on the hope within India for Modi to do on the national stage what he has done for Gujarat’s economy.
