The Asia Foundation Hosts Mongolian Delegation from The Ulaanbaatar City Municipality
San Francisco, December 15, 2014 — The Asia Foundation hosted a Mongolian delegation led by the honorable Mayor of Ulaanbaatar, Mr. Bat-Uul Erdene today at its offices in San Francisco. The event highlighted the successful partnership between the Foundation and The Ulaanbaatar City Municipality, culminating in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between both parties to improve and expand opportunities of the citizens of Ulaanbaatar. The signing marks the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Foundation and the 375th anniversary of The Ulaanbaatar City Municipality.
“I am delighted about the successful partnership between The Asia Foundation and The Ulaanbaatar City Municipality in the areas of urban governance and service delivery with a focus on the ger areas; economic development and improving transparency and combating anti-corruption,” said Foundation President David D. Arnold. “I believe the reason our partnership has been so successful has been due to its approach which emphasizes flexibility, joint learning, innovation and sustainability.”
The Foundation’s urban governance program has collaborated with the Ulaanbaatar City Municipality on a number of programs, including working to strengthen evidence-based and participatory planning through a community mapping initiative in the ger areas; supporting the city charter development process; improving solid waste management through a model khoroo solid waste management project; and developing an Ulaanbaatar economic development strategy to increase growth and job opportunities in the city, all supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Australian Government (DFAT).
Other delegation members included: Mr. Gerelchuluun Yo, the Chief of Staff, Head of the Governor’s Office; Mr. Temuulin Enkhmunkh, Head of the Economic Development Agency; Mr. Bat-Ulzii Batchuluun, Head of the Metropolitan Department of Information Technology; and were accompanied by Mr. Amarsanaa Erdenebileg; and Mr. Bayarkhuu Dorj, Acting Consul General. The Foundation’s urban governance and digital teams who work closely with the delegation were on hand to present a special video highlighting the partnership.
