The Asia Foundation Hosts South Asian Forum for Minorities

Bangkok, January 18, 2016 — On January 20-21, The Asia Foundation will host the South Asian Forum for Minorities under the Pakistan Religious Freedom Initiative-Leaders of Influence. The conference, held in Bangkok, will discuss the situation of, and challenges to, religious minorities in South Asia and propose regionally integrated solutions by bringing together prominent journalists and development practitioners from the region. Participants include: activists, regional experts, journalists, parliamentarians, government representatives, and South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) delegates.

Panel members will convene on the effective models for minority protection and the basic right of an individual to associate with the identity of her/his choosing, while examining the broader contours of the collective identities of minorities in South Asia. Other program highlights will include: achieving equitable representation of minorities in political process, participation of minority women in bureaucracy and political systems, policies of successive governments towards mainstreaming minorities, national human rights institutions, human rights mechanism under South Asian Countries and more.

Panelists include: the Foundation’s Country Representative in Thailand Kim McQuay; the Foundation’s Deputy Country Representative in Pakistan Ameena Ilahi; the Foundation’s Team Manager in Pakistan Nadia Tariq Ali; Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nepal Shehla Raza; Ambassador of Pakistan to Thailand Sohail Khan; Ambassador of Canada to Thailand Philip Calvert; and Commissioner, National Human Rights Commission of Thailand Angkana Neelapaijit.
