Asia Foundation and Centre for Social Research Sign Charter on Engaging Men to Counter Violence Against Women in India
Delhi, August 16, 2016 — Recently, The Asia Foundation and Centre for Social Research (CSR) in India signed an eight-point charter for men on preventing violence against women. The charter was released at a two-day conference jointly held by the Foundation and CSR. “Engaging Men and Boys in the Fight Against Violence,” was aimed at engaging men in the process of women’s empowerment, and eradicating violence against women.
“The fight for equality must continue to be the focus of all agencies,” said The Asia Foundation’s Senior Program Officer Diya Nag, who presented a session. “Changing social mindsets is a long-term process. This programme has been an important step towards exposing communities to an alternative and more progressive view of gender.”
The charters points include: saying no to all forms of violence against women; supporting the LGBTQ community; initiating dialogues with Legislative, Judiciary, and Executive stakeholders in the state for gender sensitization leading to policy changes and implementation; and using social media platforms to highlight concerns related to gender; among others.
CSR aims to propose the charter be placed in offices, educational institutions, and public spaces across India.
