Wall Street Journal Quotes Abdullah Ahmadzai on Afghan Elections
October 1, 2019 — The Wall Street Journal quotes the Foundation’s country representative in Afghanistan Abdullah Ahmadzai on voter turnout and polling center security in coverage of the 2019 presidential election in Afghanistan.
“The security provided by polling centers was unprecedented and the current national election commission appears to have learned many lessons from last year’s parliamentary elections, said Abdullah Ahmadzai, director of the Asia Foundation’s Afghanistan office.
The politics of the voter turnout are another matter. No matter who prevails and emerges as president, the scant participation of Afghan voters in Saturday’s election will be a factor in their ability to represent the Kabul government in possible negotiations with the Taliban on a political settlement of the Afghan war.
