The Role of Women in Afghanistan: Key Findings from the 2019 Survey of the Afghan People

Despite multiple rounds of negotiations between the U.S. and the Taliban throughout 2019, prospects for a sustainable political settlement in Afghanistan remain unclear, as does the future for Afghan women. Underrepresented in the peace process, Afghan women are concerned about potential outcomes and the implications of a possible U.S. withdrawal.
The 2019 Survey of the Afghan People—based on face-to-face interviews conducted in July-August 2019 with a nationally representative sample of 17,812 citizens across all 34 Afghan provinces—provides important insights on the status of women in Afghanistan and examines women’s and men’s differing views on women’s rights, security, the economy, corruption, reconciliation with the Taliban, and political participation. First commissioned in 2004, the annual survey provides an unmatched barometer of Afghan public opinion over time, allowing for analysis of gender issues and changing trends in public perceptions. Experts will discuss findings from the 2019 Survey and reflect on the implications of this year’s data for women’s rights and gender equality in Afghanistan.
