The Asia Foundation, U.S. Embassy, and National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations Launch Joint Workshop on Diplomatic Tradecraft

Phnom Penh, May 21, 2021 — The Asia Foundation, the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, and the National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations (NIDIR) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation launched a joint workshop today on diplomatic tradecraft to promote the exchange of ideas and best practices in key areas and enhance cooperation with Cambodia. Leaders from 15 diplomatic, multilateral, think-tank, and private sector organizations engaged with 31 young Cambodian diplomats in a series of four weekly workshops to exchange views on important trends like tools for communicating with the foreign public, using economic tools to advance national interests, multilateralism, and synthesizing data and information for policy makers.

“Today’s global challenges are unprecedented, and the international community will rely on its ‘next generation’ of diplomats to find solutions to these complex challenges,” said U.S. Ambassador W. Patrick Murphy in remarks to Cambodian diplomats in NIDIR.

“This workshop will create a conducive sharing and learning space for our young Cambodian diplomats to gain new insights of various topics, which I truly believe that it will equip our young Cambodian diplomats with the knowledge and skills they need to grow and thrive in this complex world,” said Delegate Minister Attached to the Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Chhem Kieth Rethy.

“This is a unique opportunity to share a variety of perspectives on topics of relevance today with young Cambodian diplomats and promote open and constructive exchange,” said Meloney C. Lindberg, country representative for The Asia Foundation.

The U.S. Embassy’s AmCam 2021 initiative highlights the United States and Cambodia’s cooperative efforts in the areas of prosperity, peace, principles, and partnership.

The National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations was officially established in 2016, as initiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn under the umbrella of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. NIDIR aims to build professionalism of Cambodian career diplomats through capacity development, to enable them to cope with the increasingly challenging world of diplomatic affairs and particularly to enhance Cambodia’s involvement and role in regional affairs.

The Asia Foundation is a nonprofit international development organization committed to improving lives across a dynamic and developing Asia.
