Asia Foundation and Australian Data Archive Sign MOU

January 11, 2018 — In late December, The Asia Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Australian Data Archive, based at the Australian National University Centre for Social Research and Methods, to initiate collaboration and knowledge sharing of complex data sets. The MOU will allow the Australian Data Archive to host the Foundation’s extensive survey collection on issues such as corruption, gender-based violence, the business climate, the state of democracy, and more.

The Asia Foundation actively supports innovative and evidence-based development programming. The San Francisco-based international development nonprofit regularly undertakes empirical research to inform its own programming and is committed to making its data available to outside researchers for further analysis. To date, it has conducted more than 300 high-quality perception surveys in support of active public discourse across its 18-country network in Asia. The Asia Foundation just launched its new Data Portal at surveys.asiafoundation.org, a key element of the organization’s commitment to innovative and evidence-based development program. The new portal provides visualizations of the Foundation’s extensive survey collection across Asia and builds on its leadership in data transparency.

The Australian Data Archive has extensive experience in the management and dissemination of a range of complex data sets, and currently hosts well over 5,000 data sets with thousands of downloads of data each year.

Last month in Canberra, Asia Foundation Senior Vice President Gordon Hein and Matthew Gray, the director of the Centre for Social Research and Methods at Australian National University, met to discuss the partnership.

In addition to serving as a repository for The Asia Foundation’s surveys, the Australian Data Archive agreement will disseminate the survey data to external audiences, broadening the nonprofit organization’s reach and impact. The two parties will further explore interactive visualization tools, and possible involvement of the Centre in technical aspects of survey methodology, quality, and dissemination.
