Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia Pakistan Joins the Let’s Read! Initiative

Islamabad, July 16, 2018 — Books for Asia Pakistan joined The Asia Foundation’s regional Let’s Read! initiative on July 5th, contributing the first English-to-Urdu translation of the popular children’s book by Pratham Book’s Storyweaver, Didi and the Colorful Treasure. At an in-house session in Islamabad, two teams of staff members filled the role of editors and translators, and completed the Let’s Read! platform’s first book with a right-to-left language orientation. The Asia Foundation looks forward to reaching more books in local languages to children in Pakistan by collaborating with partners to translate, create, publish and encourage reading books.

The Asia Foundation staff translate Didi and the Colorful Treasure from English to Urdu.

The Let’s Read! initiative draws on The Asia Foundation’s in-country capabilities, local partnerships, and technological expertise to empower communities to create, translate, and share high-quality, richly illustrated children’s books across Asia. Since 1954, The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program donated printed books to thousands of under-resources educational institutions in 21 Asian countries. While print remains the most effective means of delivering information in many parts of the developing world, mobile technology’s increasing affordability suggests e-books hold the promise of becoming a cost-effective, scalable model.
